Oasis of Symmetry | Aisha Changezi
Artist Statement:
As an interdisciplinary artist, I am fascinated with the process of creating art, which pushes me to explore different styles and mediums. When I first started exploring Islamic geometric patterns, it felt so natural, especially due to my experience as a trained painter with a special interest in traditional arts. There was something calming about the symmetry, the earthy color palettes, and the ebb and flow of angular and biomorphic shapes all coming together in perfect harmony. I totally submerged myself in learning how to analyze and draw the patterns.
For this series, part of my process was to take traditional geometric patterns and present them in a contemporary way–be it paper cutting by hand, replicating the slow and meditative process of tile cutting or plaster carving, or impersonating Persian miniature strokes on a macroscopic scale! No matter how I chose to design my compositions, there was always a calming and meditative feel to it. In this chaotic world of instant gratification and short, fast-paced videos, I wanted my audience to take a moment to slow down like I have. I aspire to take them to a place which is balanced, calming, and beautiful. My goal is for my audience to lose themselves in the hypnotic, intricate designs of these works, just as I had in the slow labor of constructing these complex pieces. While observing the structural insights of these patterns, one can ponder on their inner self and their connection with the universe.
