Buckham Fine Arts Project is pleased to announce its fourth Writer In Residence: Jenifer Fernandes Veloso
BFAP’s 2023-2024 Writer In Residence is Jenifer Fernandes Veloso
Buckham Fine Arts Project launched its Writer In Residence project in early 2021 to engage contemporary literary arts and Flint’s Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) community. Buckham is pleased to announce the selection of its fourth Writer in Residence: Jenifer Fernandes Veloso.
The 2023 - 2024 Writer In Residence collaboration invites Jenifer Fernandes Veloso to engage with her interest in visual art, grow her creative practice, and gain exposure for her literary arts. While ensuring representation within its programming, Buckham continues to grow deeper ties within Flint’s BIPOC community. This cycle will include new perspectives with the residency’s first Brasilian-American writer. Veloso’s compositions will be compiled with Buckham Gallery’s exhibition programming in a publication at the season’s end, fall of 2024.
As the resident literary artist, Veloso will attend Buckham Gallery’s ten exhibitions between October 2023 and September 2024. This exhibition schedule includes 13 solo artistic presentations, five large group shows, and four small group shows. After absorbing the visual presentations, Veloso will create written compositions responding to her experience, as catalyst for her literary practice. In addition to the residency and honorarium, Veloso joins the Buckham Arts Collective with a complimentary Artist Collaborator membership.
"This opportunity fosters growth and engagement between visual and literary arts practices. We are absolutely delighted to work with Jenifer Fernandes Veloso for the 2023 - 2024 residency. Veloso's distinctive viewpoint makes her the ideal candidate to engage with this season's artists, including numerous Latinx visual artists, as she can provide a sincere response to their artwork while also delving into their historical and cultural significance,” said Michele Leclaire, Executive Director.
ABOUT THE RESIDENT ARTIST : JENIFER FERNANDES VELOSO
Jenifer Fernandes Veloso is a first generation Brasilian-American and a Flint based photojournalist covering the Latinx community, local sports, and social activism. She developed her passion for storytelling while working as a dedicated trauma nurse in a level one emergency department in Flint. Her past journalism projects include emergency responders, frontline workers, intersectionality, and Latinx life and culture in the greater Flint area. Her work has appeared in Bloomberg News, Click Magazine, The Hour Detroit, MLive, The Flint Journal, Flintside, and Flint Beat.
"Originally I was interested in the Writer in Residence Program to help grow and stretch my creative writing skills. My goal is to one day write a collection of short stories celebrating my Brasilian ancestry and culture. I believe that being the WIR will help me develop the skills needed to achieve this goal. I hope to also create a robust bridge for Latinx community members to see themselves represented in the writings I contribute as a reflection on the featured visual artists' work at BFAP. I feel honored and I'm elated to be able to creatively respond to each of the gallery's exhibitions using the languages that have shaped me; Portuguese, Spanish and English," said Veloso.
