Buckham Fine Arts Project is pleased to announce its third Writer In Residence: Bob Campbell.
BFAP’s 2022 - 2023 Writer In Residence is Bob Campbell
Buckham Fine Arts Project launched its Writer In Residence project in early 2021 to engage contemporary literary arts and Flint’s Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) community. BFAP is pleased to announce the selection of its third Writer in Residence: Bob Campbell.
The 2022 - 2023 Writer In Residence collaboration will provide an opportunity for Bob Campbell to engage with his interest in visual art and gain exposure for his literary arts, while engaging Flint’s BIPOC community in a meaningful way. BFAP continues to grow deeper ties within its community. Campbell’s compositions will be compiled with Buckham Gallery’s exhibition programming in a publication at the season’s end, fall of 2023.
As the resident literary artist, Campbell will attend Buckham Gallery’s nine exhibitions between October 2022 and September 2023. This exhibition schedule includes 20 solo artistic presentations, two large group shows, two small group shows and one Emerging Artist Fellowship presentation as part of BFAP’s collaboration with the Arts + Culture Research Cluster at University of Michigan-Flint. Campbell will create written compositions responding to his experience with the presented visual artworks, as catalyst for his literary practice.
"This opportunity was designed to foster growth and engagement between visual and literary arts practices. The selection process was highly competitive and our jurors had much to consider and discuss as they worked their way through a host of technically accomplished and conceptually intriguing proposals. We are absolutely delighted to work with Bob Campbell for the 2022 - 2023 residency,” said Michele Leclaire, Executive Director.
ABOUT THE ARTIST : BOB CAMPBELL
Bob Campbell is a local writer who was born and raised in Flint. His debut novel, Motown Man, was published in November 2020 by Urban Farmhouse Press.
Bob's creative nonfiction, essays and novel excerpts have appeared in Michigan Quarterly Review, Belt Magazine, Forge Literary Magazine, Hypertext Magazine, All Write in Sin City (podcast) and Gravel Magazine. He is a contributor to Belt Publishing’s Midwest Architecture Journeys, published in October 2019. He is also a contributor to We Poke Along Writers Project (wepokealong.umich.edu), inspired by the Depression-era state guides written and published under the auspices of the Federal Writers' Project, a program initiated by the Roosevelt administration's Works Project Administration (WPA).
Bob was a staff writer for the Flint Journal, Lexington Herald-Leader and Detroit Free Press. He was an electrician at AC Spark Plug for seven years before moving into journalism. He is currently manager of marketing and communications for Mott Community College.
“Serving as a Writer in Residence with Buckham Fine Arts Project is a great honor and will help nurture my growth as a creative writer by challenging my sense of observation and perception. It’s also a tremendous responsibility to the featured visual artists, whose work I will support with the written compositions produced over the next year, and to the Buckham Fine Arts Project for placing its confidence in me,” said Campbell.
2022 - 2023 BFAP: WRITER IN RESIDENCE
As Buckham Fine Arts Project's Writer In Residence, Campbell will receive an honorarium and a complimentary Buckham Artist Collaborator membership for his participation, exemplifying BFAP’s commitment to supporting contemporary arts in its community.
