Buckham Gallery’s May show presents artists spanning Buckham’s 40-year history. This invitational exhibition features over 60 artists, including founding members, current and past members of the Collective, as well as select individuals who participated in Buckham’s exhibition programming through the years.
Buckham Fine Arts Project was founded in 1984 by a core group of highly motivated working artists, artists/teachers, and arts advocates from the Flint area, who recognized the community’s need for a local exhibition and performance venue that would focus its creative attention on presenting innovative, ambitious work. The founders of this then new nonprofit organization built their passion directly into its mission: to enrich the cultural life of its surrounding communities by presenting a broad range of innovative contemporary art, both visual and performance, of the highest quality and standard. Buckham Fine Arts Project's purpose was, and continues to be, to provide access to high-quality contemporary arts in all media for the benefit of the public and to enrich and enhance local cultural opportunities by presenting works and concepts that are not already being provided by other organizations in the area. 1984 Artist Members: Jim Anthony, Syd Atkinson, John Bender, Cindy Bibb, Joe Bommarito, Robin Bucab, Bob Caskey, Gary Gebhardt, Jan Hartrauft, Ramon Hill, Ken Kinyon, John Kotarski, Marion Listwak, John McCormick, Pat Mishina, Nancy Moran, Sam Morello, Tom Nuzum, Brian Shelly, Jan Surface, Jack Strubbe 1984 Sustaining Members: Kathleen Rose, Linda Rose, Michael Ryan, Barbara Schaffer Today the cooperative group working together in pursuit of that mission is known as the Buckham Arts Collective. The Collective is made up of Artist Collaborators (Visual and Literary Artists) and Sustaining Members who advocate for Buckham’s mission. 40 Years of Buckham Fine Arts Project - Exhibiting Artists: *current Buckham Arts Collective member Guy Adamec*, Jim Anthony, Syd Atkinson, Joe Bommarito, Thom Bohnert, Bob Caskey, Aisha Changezi*, Bill Chatterson, Ed Custer, Nic Custer*, Nancy A. May 10, 2024: 40 Years of Buckham Fine Arts Project opens at ARTWALK May 10 from 6 to 9 PM and runs through June 8, 2024. Buckham Gallery is FREE and open to the public, Wednesday through Saturday from 11 AM to 6 PM. About Buckham Fine Arts Project After the inception of its cooperative membership in 1984, under the leadership of prominent Flint artists, Thomas Nuzum and Sam Morello, Buckham Fine Arts Project mounted its first exhibition in May of 1984, Enclaves I. Quickly gaining a reputation for presenting edgy, ambitious works, many of Buckham's early exhibitions featured unique, large-scale installations that transformed the gallery into an immersive experience. The original gallery space (1984-2019), was a large open loft space with a barrel ceiling. The venue, owned by founding member Gary Gebhardt, was located in a vintage building in downtown Flint. The artist-members of Buckham Fine Arts Project, transformed the space, installing lighting, drywall, and required amenities. Soon, artists from the area and across the state and country were exhibiting at Buckham. The gallery became the hub of Flint's creative community, providing both visual and performing artists with a place not only to exhibit and perform but to discuss and explore innovative, creative ideas and processes. Artists from all backgrounds and disciplines created a vibrant community. In the ensuing years, Buckham Gallery has presented more than four-hundred visual art exhibitions and a substantial number of other events including poetry readings, performance art pieces, plays, concerts, film presentations, and open mic events. For Buckham's Artist Collaborator members, many who have exhibited nationally and internationally, the gallery has provided a home base and an appreciative audience who has followed their artistic development for decades. Artists from across the country have enabled Buckham to fulfill its mission by presenting art that is new to the community, and often cutting-edge. Prominent guest artists, both visual and performance, have included Dennis Oppenheim, Allen Ginsberg, Charles McGee, George N'Namdi, Ed Fraga, and Anne Harris. In 2019, with generous funding provided by the CS Mott Foundation, Buckham Gallery moved to a new facility in downtown Flint. The new gallery space, ground-level with electronic doors, allows easy access to all guests. Located on the Second Street corridor, Buckham Gallery is accessible by bus, car, and foot traffic, and is near several other downtown arts organizations, such as Flint Institute of Arts, Mott-Warsh Collection, and Greater Flint Arts Council. Since the move, the gallery's daily visitor count has quadrupled and now includes audiences from well outside the Genesee County area establishing Buckham as a destination arts venue. Buckham Gallery is proud of its history and maintains its legacy of presenting innovative contemporary art of the highest standard and quality. Reaching out to artists across the country via an annual Call for Entry has allowed Buckham Gallery to present a wide range of viewpoints and artistic ideas. Showcasing a vast range of styles, content, subject matter, and media, Buckham Gallery offers Flint area residents artistic experiences typically available only in larger urban areas. One example of this is the exhibition, Field Work, in 2019 with guest curator Allison Wong of the Wasserman Projects. Wong curated this invitational exhibition presenting works by Morgan Barrie, Susan Goethel Campbell, Lindsey Dezman, Iris Eichenberg, Nancy Mitchnick, Amy Sacksteder, Margo Wolowiec, and Elizabeth Youngblood. Another key example is Disrupted Realism, a national juried exhibition in 2021 to explore contemporary painting that challenges the traditional concepts of realism with juror John Seed, author of Disrupted Realism: Paintings for a Distracted World. Both exhibitions drew attendees from across the state and beyond to Flint, Michigan Since its founding, Buckham Fine Arts Project has been supported by the efforts of its artist members as well as the financial support of community members and organizations. Buckham's Artist Collaborator members have provided leadership in the role of Board members, artistic advisors, and event/exhibition volunteers. Individuals and community organizations, including the CS Mott Foundation, the Michigan Arts and Culture Council, National Endowment for the Arts, the Genesee County Arts and Culture Millage Funds, and in the early years of Buckham Fine Arts Project, the Ruth Mott Foundation and filmmaker Michael Moore have provided essential support through the years in numerous ways. Through its Collective Member dues, Community Membership dues, individual and corporate contributions, fundraising efforts, grants, call-for-art submission fees, and art sales, the nonprofit has sustained itself, allowing Buckham to continue its mission without interruption for the past 40 years. With a reliable support system, Buckham Gallery remains dedicated to providing quality contemporary art to Flint, Genesee County, and beyond via its monthly exhibitions, Flint’s ARTWALK receptions, exhibit-related programming, and Literary or Performance events. The gallery continues to be a robust support system for both local and national artists seeking a professional exhibition space. Forty years later, though now better known as Buckham Gallery, our artist-led collective still holds true to its vision of supporting and nurturing artists, building community and inclusivity, while challenging our audience to engage with and look at art in new ways. While we are best known for our exhibition space, it is important to emphasize our nonprofit status and correlating outreach programming. We continue to foster relationships with other organizations to strengthen our community. |
