University of Michigan-Flint Arts + Culture Research Cluster and Buckham Fine Arts Project are pleased to announce the opening of submissions for the 2024 Flint Emerging Artist Fellowship.
Through the Emerging Artist Fellowship, UM-Flint and Buckham Gallery seek to:
What will an artist get out of this experience? The artist will have access to UM-Flint’s art studios, woodshop, and technology, private studio space and exhibition/performance opportunity at Riverbank Arts (UM-Flint’s community art space located in the Northbank Center), studio critiques with Buckham artists and UM-Flint faculty, invitations to attend Buckham Gallery events, and be awarded an honorarium of $2,500 for this fellowship and have an additional budget of up to $1,500 to spend on artistic materials, collaborators, or other expenses necessary to complete the work.
What does it mean to be in a fellowship? The fellowship changes every year depending on the selected artist’s work, interests, and needs. The program is continually shaped in conversation with the artist.
Minimally, the selected artist will work in the studio at Riverbanks Arts throughout the academic year to create new work and share it with people on campus and in the area. The fellowship will culminate in a public sharing of the work. This could be a performance, exhibition, screening, etc. The event need not be of a complete or finished work. We will work with the artist to figure out how this process can best be shared with the public.
The artist will also participate in campus and community engagement activities. These engagements will be developed in conversation with the artist to ensure they are mutually beneficial. These could take the form of classroom visits, performances, Buckham Gallery programming, open studio sessions, classes at the Flint Institute of Art, working with a student group or club, and/or studio tours.
Eligibility:In order to apply you must be an artist currently residing in Genesee County or a 40 mile radius to ensure accessibility to Downtown Flint. You must also not be a current student or be enrolled as a student during the 2024 calendar year. Artists must be available to visit UM-Flint and Buckham Gallery at various periods throughout the academic year. Artists from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to apply, including: Dance, Design, Film/Video, Literary Arts, Multimedia Arts, Music, Painting, Poetry, Photography, Theatre, Visual Arts, etc… You will be asked some short answer questions about your artistic practice and asked to provide 3-5 examples of artistic works. Submissions must be received by 11:59 PM on November 4, 2023.
“The Fellowship provides an incredible foundation: resources, tools, and guidance for young and emerging artists in Flint. Our partnership with Buckham Fine Arts Project provides access to established artists and mentorship from a community of supportive professional creatives… while we at UM-Flint offer academic insight and support – the tools, resources, and – above all – the space [at Riverbank Arts] for an individual to focus, learn, and grow as an artist.” stated professor Ben Gaydos.
REVIEW PROCESS:
Applications for the fellowship must be submitted through Buckham Gallery’s website by 11:59 PM on October 28, 2023. All submissions are reviewed by a panel composed of University of Michigan-Flint faculty members, students, Buckham collaborating artists, and community members. A short list of the highest ranking submissions will be brought in for interviews. The review panel will make the final selection for the artist fellowship.

Buckham sees its role as advocate and assisting with mentorship for the emerging artist,” said Michele Leclaire, Executive Director.
