Artist Statement Matthew Owen Wead’s work employs an interdisciplinary approach focusing on the theme of adversity, particularly for overlooked people and communities. Using adversity as a center point, his work explores subject matter involving identity, personal narratives, critical history, memory, language and tradition. With a background in printmaking, Wead’s practice draws on the history of the art form and its techniques to create works that investigate the idea of resilience in form, subject matter, materiality.
Artist Bio Matthew Owen Wead (b. 1984, Chicago, IL) currently resides and works in Chicago. He received a BFA from Morehouse College (2006) and an MFA from University of Maryland (2009) with a focus on printmaking, sculpture and photography. His work is included in collections around the world, including David C. Driskell Center, Flint Institute of the Arts, Spelman College, and The Artis Collection.
