Ceramicist Guy Adamec has been a cornerstone of Buckham Gallery since 1985 and the Flint arts community going on 50 years. Adamec’s vessels focus energy into the interior, providing a place to make offerings. His glazes reflect qualities of outer space and the Southwest landscape. Those new to collecting and longtime collectors of Adamec’s work will be equally delighted with this new and unexpected body of work!
Artist Statement I have always considered each vessel I make to be a container of energy. My pieces in the past have always focused on timelessness:
Reflections on the American Southwest Landscape
Glazes that reflect the qualities of outer space
Vessels that focus energy into the interior; a place to make an offering
Vessels to contain ones spirit
The more I view the universe from different viewpoints, the more similar it becomes. From atoms with electrons spinning around nuclei, to solar systems, to galaxies circling black holes. “A universal energy floating through everything, all varied by a matter of scale” These vessels displayed are containers for different forms of that energy. - May 2025
Artist Biography Born in Oak Park Illinois, I grew up on Chicago's west side. A tool designer Father, a stay at home Mother, a typical 1950's family, except we were taught that creativity was paramount, and were encouraged to have confidence in our abilities and try everything. My sister received her Masters in painting in Florence Italy. My brother received his MD and PHD in physiology from the University of Chicago. My siblings were a significant positive influence on me, the youngest. Starting out with a chemistry, Pre-Medicine major in college seemed logical, and later, switching to art seemed natural to me too. I stayed with art, earned a BA in ceramic and sculpture from Knox College; continued at the Art Institute of Chicago, and then received an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Winding up in Flint Michigan by chance has been an excellent experience for me. I've taught ART at almost every place one could in Flint, from Mott Adult High in the county jail, to Flint Schools, to Mott Community College, and of course the Flint Institute of Art, going on 50 years. It is great to be part of a thriving art community like Flint Michigan has!!
