Dustin Brinkman | Ballad of a Sojourn May 9 - June 7, 2025
Artist Statement Utilizing familial archives, performative reference photos, and found or repurposed materials from the Midwest and Southern Atlantic territories, my prints examine the interwoven threads of economic calamity, familial stewardship, and the social norms embedded within my landscapes. Through the processes of destruction, repair, and recontextualization, I dissect these spaces, creating an exploded view of time, architecture, and kinship. This approach allows me to experience my own body as it negotiates and navigates these constructions—floating or stumbling—through each door and window. By linking the past, present, and future, I look to establish a reciprocal role and responsibility beside the landscapes I inhabit. This journey involves an acceptance or rejection of the knowledge accumulated within these tender and brutal moments, shaping my understanding of both place and identity as a site of dialogue where historical narratives intersect with contemporary realities. The act of recontextualizing found materials not only honors the legacies of those who came before me but also challenges the viewer to reconsider their relationship with the landscapes around them. Each print serves as a testament to the complexities of individual responsibility and communal memory. I'll be hand delivering my work to the gallery on April 30th. Let me know if there is anything else I can provide in the meantime.
