$100 Shipping Stipend for ALL Artists
Deadline: CLOSED
Submission Fee: $25
Teeth & Hair is a national open call for visual art of any 2D or 3D media featuring, using, or about teeth or hair and their enduring cultural significance.
Developmentally, the emergence of teeth and hair is celebrated as an important stage in childhood. While the loss of teeth or hair frequently coincides with aging and a sense of loss and realization of our impending mortality. We spend countless amounts of time and money to preserve or change their appearance to slow this inevitable decay.
Anxieties surrounding the loss or degradation of these features may plague our dreams. Conversely, some people intentionally modify or intentionally do not modify their teeth and hair to achieve appearances beyond the norm or to honor long-standing cultural traditions.
Lore and symbolism surrounding teeth & hair permeates every culture– for example, the infamous Tooth Fairy collects baby teeth for their nefarious deeds in exchange for coins. Many lovers have collected locks of hair from the subject of their affections to have a piece of them with them. In the animal kingdom, alligator, shark, and predator teeth are perceived as dangerously fascinating artifacts while mink, fox, and other fur is coveted as a sign of prestige and wealth. Subjectively, teeth and hair can be perceived as beautiful, grotesque, or abject. This call is open to interpretation and for all visual media.
Founded in 1984, Buckham Gallery is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the vision to support and nurture artists, build community and inclusivity, while challenging our audience to engage with contemporary art in new ways. In commitment to our vision to support artists, Buckham Gallery will provide a stipend of $100 to each artist selected for this exhibition to aid in shipping costs. We acknowledge this may not cover all costs associated with the shipment and return of artwork.
