Buckham Gallery is pleased to announce the selected artists for our upcoming exhibition, BIPOC is The Theme! Juror Tyanna J. Buie labored over the selection, starting with 316 works, to ultimately select 43 works, by 42 artists. BIPOCis The Theme! National Juried Exhibition Juror Tyanna J. Buie April 8 - May 14, 2022
BIPOC is trendy right now. However Black Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC) artists have traditionally been underrepresented in U.S. galleries and museums. How do we make this moment in time more than a moment? Singular Black History Month exhibitions do not make up for the decades of systemic racism and omission from our arts institutes. Buckham Gallery acknowledges the need to build stronger relationships with BIPOC artists and our community. “BIPOC is The Theme,” with juror Tyanna J. Buie, is a launch pad to build new collaborations with BIPOC artists. In addition to the traditional cash prizes, Buckham Gallery will select artists to be featured in the 2023 - 2024 season.
Deadline: November 15, 2021
Prizes: First prize $750; Second prize $500; third prize $250; additionally, up to three artists will be selected for exhibition in the 2023 - 2024 season.
Juror: Tyanna J. Buie
A Chicago and Milwaukee native, Tyanna Buie received her BA from Western Illinois University, and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In 2012, Buie received an emerging artist Mary L. Nohl Fellowship and is the recipient of the 2015 Love of Humanity Award from the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the recipient of the prestigious 2015 Joan Mitchell Painters & Sculptors Grant, the 2019 Kresge Artist Fellowship/Visual Arts, the 2019/2020 Grant Wood Fellowship in Printmaking at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA, and the 2020 Fellowship.art award, a top accelerator award/program funded through gener8tor. Buie’s works have been acquired by major institutions and private collections nationally, and in 2020, Buie was selected to collaborate with Shepard Fairey on the “Voting Rights is Human Rights” mural in Milwaukee, WI.
