Artist Statement
From Different Places “No, I haven’t” I replied. Katie Cotton, (yes Buckham’s Katie) had asked me if I ever show my animal clay pieces. From that question, I decided to show the two themes I’ve been exploring for over fifty years, the animal pieces and the cartoon-inspired pieces. I’ve always wrestled with which of these two directions I should spend my studio time. When discussing this dilemma with artist/educator Doug Goering, (now gone to his final reward), he simply said, “They come from different places.” Anyway, I’ve seldom exhibited both in one setting. Recent developments In the animal series, I’ve worked with other materials than clay, gotten big and moved outside. Also, I’ve incorporated the animal series into wheel-thrown functional ware: plates, cups, etc. With the cartoon-inspired series I’m incorporating color and adding texture. Hemingway said when an idea takes hold and has a life of its own the best you can do is hold on tight for the ride. The strongest pieces in this show were made by me while riding in the back passenger seat and holding on tight. |
