Caitlin Cartwright | What Remains July 18 - August 15, 2025
Artist Statement
In this series of work, I’ve been thinking a lot about shadows as being something like a record of our existence. How they are like a mirror of us while being distorted. The same way the line between memory and reality can also be distorted while being a mirror who we are.. Figures and faces are obscured or covered, personal iconography is used throughout the work. These paintings invite the viewer to look into their own memories, how experiences and emotions may have been abstracted over time. What remains and what has changed.
Artist Bio
Caitlin Cartwright is a Detroit-based painter whose vibrant narrative works combine painting, drawing, and collage to explore the stories that connect people across cultures and experience. Many years spent living and working with grassroots community work in locales such as Madagascar, Namibia, India, as well as multiple places within the US, influence both the emotional and geographical scope of her pieces. Caitlin earned her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art, and an MA in sustainable international development from SIT, and completed a six-month residency at the Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft in Columbia, NC. She uses art as a storytelling tool for economic empowerment, peace building, and healing and wellness.
