Amanda Edwards | Little Bean Dude

Exhibition Description 
Little Bean Dude is a character that was created spontaneously for my solo exhibition in September 2019 titled “Friends”. One of my dear friends laughed endearingly at the sight of this character and asked “Who is the little blue dude?” and Little Bean Dude was born. 
This character has shown up in many of my works since his creation and this exhibition is meant to honor him, as well as introduce him to new friends. I view Little Bean Dude in a similar way that others may burrow under a weighted blanket, hold a favorite plushie, or other objects that may invoke feelings of calm, comfort, and a sense of safety. He often features the same expressions - eyes open or eyes closed, always a slight smile of contentment. His form is made up of simple shapes and does not exhibit hard edges, reflective of his symbolism. 
I have personal struggles with anxiety, depression, and just generally being a human bean which often turns me towards art as a therapeutic way to move through my feelings. Little Bean Dude has become my most recent outlet for that. Looking outward, I know that I am not alone and we are all emotional beans. My hope is to pass along to the viewer a sense of comfort and contentment, along with the joy and silliness that this little blue bean has come to symbolize through the creative process.

Artist Bio 
Amanda Edwards holds a BFA of Illustration from Columbia College Chicago. Her work is primarily focused on stylized characters that incorporate feeling, humor, and child-like wonder into the imagery. Amanda’s primary mediums are drawing and painting, both physical and digital with a large focus on color. Amanda resides in the Greater Flint Area, is an artist collaborating member of Buckham Gallery and exhibits regionally.
