2024 Annual Report

Since 1984, Buckham Fine Arts Project has opened its doors to those seeking the power of art to experience beauty, better understand ourselves and others, and be inspired to reach new heights. Today, Buckham is still committed to supporting and nurturing artists, building community and inclusivity, while challenging us to engage with art in new ways.

2024 Exhibition Programming
Buckham Gallery presented eleven visual art exhibitions featuring work by local, regional, and national artists who make significant statements in their chosen discipline and provide relevant arts programming. This Anniversary Season also highlighted artists who have had an impact on BFAP through its 40-year history. 2024’s exhibitions featured seven large group shows, four small groups, and 12 concurrent and carefully paired solo artist presentations. This includes approximately 763 artworks by 247 visual artists, stipends to artists, and three artist talks with nine artists.

December 8 - January 13
Contemporary Realism is the work of Todd Burroughs, Frits Hoendervanger, Armin Mersmann, and Robert Schefman who are working in our time and strive to understand both the potential of Realism and its pitfalls.
January 19 - February 10
Ariana Vaeth was the second of three artists selected from 2022’s BIPOC Is The Theme! for future exhibitions in the anniversary season. High Profile emphasized the boundaries that delineate where safety thrives, these contexts highlighting an activity or person of interest: we gaze at them as they engage in more pressing matters.
Press Play, national juried exhibition, explores the varieties of printmaking methods and media while making connections between traditional and contemporary ideas.
Flint artist, 0591, developed a personal visual language and creative practice through community work, social-crisis awareness, and research. His exhibition, Donut King, highlights the everyday heroes in the community.
February 16 - March 16
Lauren Woods’ practice and creative research explore concepts of mythic time. In Forest Elegy, nature is a primary source of visual metaphor and inspiration. Large-scale paintings depicting lush, wooded thresholds invite viewers into a mythological space, where areas of decay and growth become reflective settings to consider non-human space and time.
Collectanea considers three Midwest artists whose work revolves around concepts of migration and invasiveness, and the relationships humans have with each other and the ecosystems they occupy. Paloma Núñez-Regueiro, Geo Rutherford, and Jessica Tenbusch based their work in the Great Lakes region.
March 22 - 23, 2024
Build Your Own Collection (B.Y.O.C.)- Buckham hosted an exhibition of 243 works of art. At the event, 128 attendees received refreshments, live music, and an opportunity to purchase artworks in support of Buckham and the artists. All sales were split 50/50, and Artists were happy to sell their work. This event was not only a great deal of fun and profitable, it gained exposure for Buckham’s programming to new audiences.
April 5 - May 4
Through the tactile nature of fiber art, Boisali Biswas invites viewers to immerse themselves in a sensory journey, tracing the contours of each woven line and unraveling the stories woven within. Bonded thru Threaded Memories is an immersion in delicate fibers, intimate shadows and memories.

Metaphysique, national juried exhibition, addresses the ideas, issues, topics, forms, aesthetics, symbolisms, and/or etc. of the human figure: clothed, bare, in any media. Ultimately the works presented include paintings, sculptures, printmaking, and textiles.

Sculpture, national juried exhibition, highlights three-dimensional sculptures created with clay, glass, metal, paper, plastic, wood, or found objects. Sculptures were displayed on pedestal, floor, or coming off the wall and include abstract forms, representational works, and assemblages of found objects.
May 10 - June 8
Buckham Gallery presents 40 Years of Buckham Fine Arts Project, an exhibition of visual artworks from founding artists, past and present members of the Collective, as well as invited guests who have contributed to Buckham’s journey.
June 14 - July 13
I Get My Hit And Then I Run With It, investigates the construction of individual identity as prescribed by societal notions of value and binaries. Jessika Edgar’s sculptures and installations aim to re-create a feeling of cognitive dissonance, a psychological space that is simultaneously critical and indulgent, referencing material from popular culture ephemera and media imagery especially related to gender, beauty, and material desire.
Located in the Newly Unfamiliar, reflects the artists’ independent returns to the Midwest where they grew up. Making work about where you are is an investigation, and Laura Carpenter Truitt’s return is a new reflection on the landscape where she spent her first 20 years. Amy Reckley also experienced a return, in her case to Michigan. For both, it’s an adjustment to the weather, the seasons, the concerns, the habits, and the economies of these areas that they thought they knew was the impetus for this body of work.
July 19 - August 16
Craig Cully and Kelly Leslie seek to discover what comes out of the intersection of their differing perspectives by flirting with the interruption of each of their individual practices in an attempt to find immanence, not transcendence. Tipping Point embodies the memory of its own creation rather than an idea of what it means to collaborate.
Yvette L. Cummings’ exhibition, In Spite of It, explores the complicated path of youth, beauty, and femininity as expressed through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor.
Craig Hinshaw has been exploring two main themes for over fifty years: animal pieces and cartoon-inspired pieces. Both themes are brought to life through Clay Vessels.
August 30 - September 28
Buckham completes its 40th Anniversary Season with two concurrent exhibitions, highlighting selected works of Founding Members Gary Gebhardt and Tom Nuzum.
October 4 - November 2
Donovan Entrekin, Michele Leclaire, Janice McCoy, Matthew Osmon, and Brian Spolans all ask more from their works than visual interpretation. They create images and narratives to explore the shadows that tend to avert our eyes, the unsettling whether physical or emotional, the collective unconscious, and frequently with a little humor, in their group exhibition, Tickle Me.
November 8 - December 7
The group exhibition, Dives, Diners & Drive-Ins, features works of various media by local Flint artists and Collaborators of the Buckham Fine Arts Project, inspired by the classic Flint Dive Bars, Dines & Drive-In movie theaters.
Brown Bag, national juried exhibition, features works about food. Food can bring with it the memories of meals made by family or eaten in childhood. It can represent culture and tradition. Food can hint at growth, joy, and bring us together.
December 13 - January 11, 2025
Snap, national exhibition juried by Darryl Baird, explores the art of photography and where it’s going.
In Threshold, Emily Scott Beck examines and visualizes gender-specific boundaries, challenges, and emergence through a range of perspectives and material methods. She highlights how specific stereotypes and historically assigned roles continue to hinder and undermine the progress of those identifying as female.
