FLINT – Shop Floor Theatre Company will begin its 2014 season with a series of staged-readings of three plays exploring contemporary issues and promoting civic dialogue. Each play will feature local actors playing a variety of different roles.
Shop Floor Theatre Company aims to create original and transformative theater with and for people of all ages, experiences and backgrounds. Shop Floor is a community centered, place-based arts and education organization, with a focus on creating programming that represents diverse voices and opinions, encourages civic dialogue and engagement, and promotes social and cultural awareness.
The three plays chosen for the 2014 staged reading series were all created in a similar “documentary” style and explore a variety of contemporary social issues, including healthcare, wealth inequality and the debate over genetically modified foods.
The plays include “Let Me Down Easy” by Anna Deavere Smith (Saturday, Feb. 22), “Nickel & Dimed” by Joan Holden (Saturday, March 29), and “Seeds” by Annabel Soutar (Saturday, April 26).
The plays will be performed at Buckham Gallery, and a community dialogue will follow each performance. This series is generously funded by the Ruth Mott Foundation, The University of Michigan-Flint Student Government & supported by the Greater Flint Arts Council.
“Let Me Down Easy,” the first of the three plays, is constructed from verbatim interview transcripts. The play’s Pulitzer Prize-winning author, Anna Deavere Smith, examines the miracle of human resilience through the lens of the national debate on healthcare. After collecting interviews with over 300 people on three continents, Smith creates a work of emotional brilliance and political substance, rendering both laughter and tears. The play will be performed at Buckham Gallery on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 7:30 p.m., with a dialogue about the play immediately following. Tickets are $5 at the door (cash only, please).
Buckham Gallery is located at 134 1/2 West 2nd St., Flint, MI 48502.
