FLINT, MI — People attending the Second Friday Artwalk this week can get one-of-a-kind Christmas ornaments while supporting downtown Flint’s Buckham Gallery.
Buckham Gallery in downtown Flint will host its annual artist member show starting on Friday for ArtWalk. In the center of the gallery sits a standout: a pink Christmas tree with more than 40 hand-decorated ornaments.
The show and customized ornaments are part of an annual Buckham Gallery tradition to help raise money and showcase the work of the artists who are members of the gallery.
Gallery Manager and Director Meghan Kelly said the ornaments on the tree were designed by artist members, board members and friends of the gallery, such as spouses of artists and board members. Ornaments are priced by size at $10, $15 and $20. All of the proceeds will go to the gallery.
The ornaments will be available until they’re sold, Kelly said.
“It was fun, because everyone could do something a little bit different. If you’re a performance-type artist, you could still do an ornament, so everything got involved that way,” Kelly said. “It’s also a bit of publicity for the artist members. We have their name on the tag, so if someone were to buy a one-of-a-kind ornament, they can find more of the artwork these people do as well.”
Along with the tree, the gallery will have various pieces — paintings and ceramics — on display by artist members. Kelly said Buckham Gallery currently has more than 40 members, who applied by submitting a resume and pieces of their work.
The gallery has extended a call for entry of group, individual, and performance submissions for October 2016 through September 2017. Submissions must include a resume, artist statement, six to 10 digital images, SASE for material return, a description of the group show that is 500 words or less, and a DVD or weblink for a performance event. Applicants can submit material to Buckham Gallery, 134 1/2 Second St., Flint, or via email to firstname.lastname@example.org, by March 15, 2016.
